Let’s talk about pores and we don’t mean strawberry pores…

Obsessing with pore size and looking in magnifying mirrors doesn’t help. Remember that Instagram pore less skin is an illusion and that real skin, healthy skin, has pores.

We are always explaining to clients that they do not in fact have pores the size of golf balls or in fact lots of blackheads and it’s that pesky magnifying mirror again messing with your mind.

Everyone, if honest would love perfect pore less, flawless skin, but over treating the skin, you risk compromising the overall health and integrity of your skin while trying to obtain what we think is perfection. Remember healthy skin isn’t always flawless and flawless skin isn’t always healthy. Why not ask yourself – Do you need to change your skins appearance to fit your ideal of what healthy skin is, or do you need to challenge your perception of what healthy skin actually looks like. It definitely isn’t smooth like glass without any vellus hair, zero imperfections and invisible pores.

Clients often complain about blackheads on their nose, but the majority of the time they don’t have blackheads. They have sebaceous filaments and although you may not like them, they are completely normal for someone with enlarged pores on the nose and active sebaceous glands. Sebaceous filaments are structures that allow sebum to flow to the surface of the skin. When the body overproduces sebum, the sebaceous filaments can fill up. They may become visible and resemble very enlarged pores. People often confuse sebaceous filaments with blackheads. In comparison a blackhead is a blockage. A plug of hardened sebum and dead skin cells that have mixed together.

Treatments can be done and products used to improve their appearance but nothing will ever remove them completely. Be realistic, stop obsessing over unrealistic images you see online or in magazines. We all have skin flaws. It’s important to understand the difference between what is normal, what is not normal and what is unhealthy (unrealistic expectations about what your complexion should look like) so not to compromise skin health in the pursuit of perfection.
